Kienholz was untrained as an artist but managed to make a name for himself with installations that offered commentary on modern life; he also started one of the most important galleries in Los Angeles, the Ferus, after he arrived here in the fifties from the Pacific Northwest. Later on, he stirred up controversy with the L.A. County Board of Supervisors, who wanted to ban his show at LACMA in 1966. Kienholz prevailed, and the show remained open.
