Johann Johannsson by Bil Zelman

I was thrilled when Icelandic pianist Jóhann Jóhannsson picked up the Golden Globe for Best Original Score for “The Theory of Everything” last night.

It was a similar feeling to when Swell Season took home an Oscar years back – the indie underdogs triumphing on Hollywood’s biggest stage against the odds.

Hans Zimmer and Alexandre Desplat do consistently fantastic work and Trent Reznor has made an unexpected turn into an all-star film composer in the last few years, but Johannsson’s work has always been elegant and cinematic, perfect for the screen.

Revisit his 2012 live session on KCRW here and watch a preview below.

And a huge congrats from your friends at the station.
