Konono No. 1cast a spell over all of us this morning. The band was founded over 25 years ago and specialize in African trance grooves native to the region near the border of Congo and Angola. They play a version of the likembé, a “thumb piano,” which they crafted themselves. In an effort to mic the instrument, they added elements which distorted the sound and is central to their unique style. A happy accident, I guess you could say!

Enjoy a set of spectacular electro-traditional mixtures that make up Konono’s “Congotronics,” including Jason’s favorite “Makembe.”
