I was walking down Abbot Kinney in Venice Beach during First Fridays, a monthly festival where the streets are packed with people and food trucks, and sought solace in a small art gallery. I literally stumbled in there because I needed some quiet and calm and came across these incredible photos of Venice, and the characters that make it so special. I tracked down the name of the photographer and it was Kwaku Alston, who is best known as a celebrity and portrait photographer who has shot the First Family, Nelson Mandela, and many more.

I called him days later to participate in KCRW’s Guest DJ Project and he chose a diverse group of songs, including some he plays on set during photo shoots, like John Lennon’s “Love.”

Check out his Guest DJ set here and some of his photos below.

Kwaku Alston Guest DJ Project Set List

1 – Ambicion Eterna – Thievery Corporation

2 – Blue in Green – Miles Davis

3 – Uptown – Aya

4 – I’ve Seen That Face Before – Grace Jones

5 – Love – John Lennon
