LA reacts to verdict in Trayvon Martin case

Yesterday’s protests in Los Angeles brought crowds to South LA expressing anger and frustration over the not guilty verdict in the Trayvon Martin case. Here are some of the voices from the protest.

“I would like to see justice served. I just want to see Trayvon Martin’s parents feel a lot better about losing their son. That’s what I’d like to see. I’d like to see the violence and the racism come to an end. It’s about a racist system. It’s about an unjust system, and it’s about two parents who lost their son for no reason other than walking down the street.” – Starr Ford

“This is an outrage to the community. People go to jail for less than that, way less. Now we are all here as a community as the police can’t do anything. Sad, depressed, angry, hurt, everything. It just makes you feel like a dog’s life held more value to a human’s life. I was disgusted. My heart dropped.” – Danielle Barberinday

Several people have been arrested, including one who was among a group of demonstrators that blocked the 10 Freeway for an hour at Crenshaw Boulevard. Police cleared the scene by firing non-lethal beanbags at protesters. The Los Angeles Times reports that several more people were arrested early this morning when they blocked traffic on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood and police declared an unlawful assembly. A citywide tactical alert remains in effect.

An evening prayer rally is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday in Leimert Park.
