Having spent a full week in Austin, TX back in March, I got a chance to meet and be exposed to a lot of local musicians who weren’t previously on our radar. One of them being the bilingual songstress, Lisa Morales.

Her album Luna Negra & the Daughter of the Sun (released back in January), is a country and Tejano inspired delight, with an overture of rock sprinkled over choice twangy jams. It’s a sound unique to the Southwestern identity, because it’s not country in the way Nashville music is country (and, it sure as hell is not country pop). But it’s also not straight up Tejano or Conjunto. It’s a bilingual exploration of all the cultures that play into being from Southwest U.S. (she is originally from Tucson, AZ).

The album features collaborations with Charlie Sexton, Adrian Quesada (of Grupo Fantasma), David Garza and was produced by Michael Ramos (from Charanga Cakewalk).

Lisa Morales is currently on tour with Los Lonely Boys and will be performing in Los Angeles on April 21st at Luckman Fine Arts.
