Pan Caliente: Supersonico Picks You Dont Want to Miss!

Supersonico is back!

That’s kind of a rare thing to declare in the world of music festivals that focus exclusively on Latin bands. But alas it made impact enough in 2014 that this weekend on Oct. 3rd, organizers have brought it to the Palladium for an entire day of great music.

Like many music fests, the headliners often absorb most of the focus and excitement. Rightfully so, when you’ve got strong anchors like Kinky, XimenaSariñana, and Aterciopelados. And a breath of depth in the Mids with bands like HelloSeahorse! and MalaRodriguez.

But my favorite part about music festivals has always been that amazing happenstance of luck when you miraculously arrive early, and catch a killer performance by a baby band you never even knew was on the bill.

So in that spirit, here are the three bands or reasons that I suggest you arrive early this year if you’re going to Supersonico:

1.Él Mató a un Policía Motorizado – This is one of my personal favorite new talents from the musica indie scene and a band I was able to showcase at SXSW in 2013. I’ve always been a fan of bands that can sound as good live as their recorded material and these Argentines with their nod to 90’s alternative kill it on stage. This is a band not to be missed.

2. Chancha via Circuito – Chancha is an infectious mix of minimalist electro-cumbia sounds combined with indigenous Amazonian riffs and instruments. Spawned from the Buenos Aires, cumbia, party scene, this project has been on my radar since 2009 and I am incredibly excited to finally see them it live!

3. Dengue Dengue Dengue!– This tantalizing duo from Peru is on the opposite spectrum of what the aforementioned band does. There are still elements of electro-cumbia but their sound employs classic Andean melodies and is robust with heavy beats more aligned with Tropical Bass. Along with their neon masks and their projected psychedelic (but not too trippy) visuals they are a great reason to arrive early.

… and well once you’re there you’ll be able to catch Astro, ChicanoBatman, & Torreblanca. It’s a win-win situation.
