I follow Pop Candy columnist Whitney Matheson on Twitter because she always has some interesting tidbits about pop culture to share –from comics to films and, of course, music. We’ve been show buddies at a few music festivals and her love for all these things is truly genuine. (find her at Comic Con 2011!)

Last week, she gave me a major case of NYC envy when I read a series of tweets about Patti Smith performing in Battery Park.

She opened up with “Because the Night” then covered Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day” and Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep”. If you were curious about the latter (I sure was!) someone grabbed some audio and you can hear it below.

Patti Smith – “Rolling In the Deep” (Adele Cover, Live) by TwentyFourBit.com

I’m a late bloomer when it comes to my love of Patti Smith. I think her version of “Gloria” is an inspiration and her book “Just Kids” currently sits at the very top of my “favorite books of all time.” Glad I finally got on board…never too late.

If you missed Patti’s discussion with KCRW’s Bookworm Michael Silverblatt, it is DEFINITELY worth a listen.

Editor’s Note: I rarely look at the recommended suggestions from Soundcloud but they gave me a pretty good one this time! Check out The Postelles’covering Wreckless Eric’s “Whole Wide World”.
