Today is the release date for a fantastic collection called Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan which has 80 artists covering 76 tracks on a 4-disc set. The compilation is being released in honor of the 50-year anniversary of Amnesty International(all profits will benefit their work for human rights) and contains quite a few gems. Anne Litt is a big fan of Raphael Saadiq’s take on “Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat”:

“Saadiq’s version fully embraces the blues and the best of Bob in one fell swoop. His version of Dylan’s classic is full of swagger with a side of sexy.”

Stream “Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat“:

Also, Jason Bentley is a big fan of the first track on the first disc —Johnny Cash featuring The Avett Brothers — a pairing orchestrated by producer Rick Rubin who is working on the latter’s new album.

Stream “One Too Many Mornings”:

The variety of artists involved in this project is pretty incredible, from Mariachi El Bronx to Miley Cyrus. Check out the full line up below.

LA Times music writer Randy Lewis wrote a nice piece with more info as well.
