Remote Places – “Places You Go”

Remote Places is the solo project of Justin Geller, one half of longtime indie/electro/dance/production duo Pink Skull. Through the years, the Pink Skull aesthetic evolved from a house sound to psych-rock to ambient and back again. But when the opportunity to contribute some music to a soundtrack came his way, Geller saw an opportunity to try something different – writing some traditional “pop songs.” And thus the Remote Places project was born, and with the help of friends from bands like Pissed Jeans and the Ropers, as well his Pink Skull partner Julian Grefe, he has put together the Nights and Weekends EP, due out on Box Theory Records next month. But here is an advance taste from the record, the premiere of the EP’s opening track, “Places You Go”

Recalling the sonics of music from decades prior, “Places You Go” has echoes of bands like the Cure or New Order, but with a modern twist. To me, it sounds a bit like if Matt Berninger of the National joined legendary LA-based New Wavers the Motels, with a laconic vocal backed by a snappy beat and fat synth lines. And to me, there’s nothing wrong with that!
