Lakers forward Ron Artest stopped by KCRW’s studios to tape a Guest DJ Project session just days before petitioning to change him name to “Metta World Peace.” I’m not saying his Guest DJ Project set reveals any specific reasons for the move, but he definitely showed a softer side of himself than I’ve ever seen before!

In fact, I was truly surprised by his song picks. Despite his claims that he’s not romantic and his reason why – that he got his heart broken by his first love – most of his picks were soulful songs about love, with the exception of a Mobb Deep track that represented his pursuit of basketball so he didn’t end up on the streets selling drugs like the people around him.

Ron revealed a lot about his life and his inspirations, and the songs themselves are excellent. I’m pretty hooked on the Lenny Williams track that he listens to before he hits the court. I’ve seriously listened to it 5 times since. I can see why he puts this on repeat!

Listen to the set and read a transcript here.

Ron Artest Guest DJ Project Track List

1 – My Life – Mary J. Blige

2 – Forever Mine – The O’Jays

3 – How Long, Sweet Daddy, How Long – Alberta Hunter

4 – ‘Cause I Love You – Lenny Williams

5 – Survival of the Fittest – Mobb Deep
