Santa Barbara calls citizens to comment on redistricting

Santa Barbara residents have until Friday to submit their ideas for how the city should be divided up. Districts are being carved out, as the city makes changes to the way voters elect council members. Starting this Fall, the city will be divided into six districts. Under an agreed-upon in the court settlement, Noozhawk reports, at least two must have a majority of Latino and/or Hispanic eligible voters.

A consultant hired by the city is accepting comments on three draft maps, and set up a web-based mapping system that people can use to submit their own district ideas. Pen and paper maps can also be submitted to the city clerk’s office. City Hall will be closed on Friday, so all submissions made in person need to be turned in by Thursday at 5:30pm. Online submissions are being accepted until 5pm on Friday.

The City Council will introduce the maps and conclusions at a March 18 meeting, at City Hall.
