To help, we asked writer and critic Carolyn Kellogg of the LA Times to wade through the stacks of upcoming titles.

Trouble is, there’s so much good stuff that her list is anything but short.

Blockbuster: A million copies in seven days sold in Japan

And it begins August 12th, with the release of Haruki Murakami’s Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage. In its first week in Japan, the book sold a million copies. Carolyn says Murakami is the dream of all who love literature: blockbuster sales plus inventive storytelling.

Others on her list of much-anticipated reads include:

  • The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell

  • A Girl is a Half Formed Thing by Eimear McBride

  • 10:04 by Ben Lerner

  • Perfidia by James Ellroy

Other books Carolyn mentioned but we couldn’t fit on the air include:

  • Lila by Marilynne Robinson

  • A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James

  • The Zone of Interest by Martin Amis

  • Prison Noir edited by Joyce Carol Oates

  • Stone Mattress by Margaret Atwood (whom Carolyn calls one of her favorites.)

And this long list, she says, doesn’t even include the nonfiction and YA titles she’s looking forward to reading. Whatever you choose to read, enjoy!
