She kicked off the set with Turkish folk singer Selda, and her funky, psychedelic version of a traditional song, followed by Marvin Pontiac – a fictional character created by Lounge Lizards’ founder John Lurie.
She played a track from UK phenom King Krule, followed by one of her favorite bands, Swans.
She recalled an experience recording with them that totally changed her relationship to music. Their music has a “tremendous amount of repetition and drone” and she had to sing a note for what amounted to 30 minutes. She said it was “like holding on for dear life” and she completely lost herself in it, calling it a “massive endurance test that became like a meditation.”
Annie also talked about her new album, set for release later this month, describing it as a “party record you can play at a funeral” and very much inspired by her tour with David Byrne.
She wanted to bring a “groove sensibility” with a “wink of melancholy.”
In talking about pop influences in her music, the artist says she strives to “live at the intersection of accessible and lunatic.” I love that and I think it’s represented well in her song picks!
