Most people who seeAndy Sandberg’s name immediately think comedy. But he’s actually one of those rare talented folks who can take comedy and crossover successfully into music. (though Donald Glover claims Lil Wayne is hilarious and Mike Birbiglia says the same about Bob Dylan)

His musical skits are easily the highlight of Saturday Night Live and he now has a second album coming out under the name The Lonely Island, with friends and collaborators Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, called “Turtleneck & Chain”.

He visited KCRW not long ago to share the songs that inspired HIM. He follows dancehall artist Capleton and Ghostface Killah with Roberta Flack and Beirut and then closes things up with The Strokes, who recently released a new album as well.

Ghostface track “The Champ”, however, is his musical preference around the SNL offices:

“I got this album pretty much as soon as it came out. I think I was at work at SNL and we started listening to it and this song came on and me and Akiva share an office and we were all just like like ‘Ohhhhhhhhh that’s a good beat!” And it’s Just Blaze, who is by far one of my favorite beat makers in hip hop. I think of him as sort of carrying the Premiere torch in terms of like that really raw dog hip hop, you know the stuff that really makes you nod your head and get out of your seat and just jam.”

Check out his picks here.
