Tibet House in NY, Salsa in Switzerland, Heat and Coachella in CA and Soundsplash in NZ
This week we’ve got news about, The Tibet House Concert in New York, a Salsa Festival in Switzerland , California’s Heat and Coachella Festival and Soundsplash in New Zealand.
The Tibet House benefit concert takes place at Carnegie Hall In February and has an amazing line up – Ray Davies, Sufjan Stevens, Marisa Monte, virtuoso Tibetan Flute player Nawang Khechog, Tom Verlaine…with more to be announced. Philip Glass is the Artistic Director and is also one of the founders of Tibet House along with Richard Gere and Robert Thurman. Tibet House is dedicated to presenting and preserving Tibetan culture for a western audience through workshops and retreats and hosts the Dalai Lama whenever he is in New York City. The concert takes place on February 13th to coincide with Tibetan New Year known as Losar. You can buy tickets just to attend the concert or there are special ones that include the after party where you can rub shoulders with some of artists that performed that night – for full details check out the Tibet House website.
It takes place in Zurich’s Kongresshaus and this year celebrates its eighth year of musica tropical. With salsa artists from all over the world such as Spain’s Adrian and Anita, New York’s Eddie Torres, Dubai’s El Firulete, Italy’s Sabor Colombiano, Zurich’s Salsa Power, and DJ Gabriel from Paris. There’s Casino Cubano workshops and a market selling all sorts of dance related merch– and if you love to salsa but don’t have anyone to go with, there is a dancing partner list for you to chose from.
Heat Festival. Taking place on the UC Riverside campus on February 23rd , it features Mos Def, DJ sets by Moby and Girl Talk and the multi platinum rock band 311. With crowds of 14,000 expected this year, Heat has expanded to three venues - two full sized stages and a large dance tent.–there are 6,000 free tickets for for UCR students while general tickets can
be had through ticketmaster.
Coachella Music and Arts Festival taking place April 25-27 near Palm Springs. Each year I think the line up cannot be topped but the organizers have outdone themselves again! From the greats of yester year such as Roger Waters of Pink Floyd and Teutonic giants Kraftwerk to contemporary faves such as Jack Johnson, Death Cab for Cutie, Mark Ronson, Sia, and UK star on the rise Duffy. Tickets are bound to sell out fast so pull out your credit card, pack your sunscreen and see you in the desert!
