Warpaint has been one of LA’s fastest rising bands over the last couple years. I remember when I first started hearing about them — I’m always intrigued by an all female band, what can I say – but it was their cover of David Bowie’s “Ashes to Ashes” that cemented their unique sound in my mind. As DJ Garth Trinidad says, they have “lady voodoo.”

I know I may be a bit biased, but they’ve never sounded better than they did yesterday in our studios, probably in part because they have been touring non-stop. They talked about the trust and understanding they have developed with each other, as well as their own way of communicating. They call it “psychic chemistry.” And all of it was on display as they dove into songs from their excellent debut album “The Fool.”

From the hypnotic single “Undertow” — which borrows heavily from Nirvana’s “Polly” for a few lines of the chorus but sounds nothing like it overall– to the grand “Majesty”, which they jammed out on at the end for a perfect closer to their set.

As far as new material, they tell Jason they’ve only had time to write new songs while jamming at soundchecks but plan on settling into a studio eventually to work on a releae for 2012.

Check out their live performance in our archives.
