Internet video of the week

Of course the big news was that Obama won re-election, but around the country there were measures, initiatives and smaller races that generated just as much passion and people power. Slate posted this video yesterday and I love its depiction of triumph in Minnesota when gay marriage backers learned they won against an amendment that would have defined marriage as being between a man and woman. (The best moment is at the 3:00 minute mark).

Trailer Tease

I finally saw Argo last weekend and was sure to get there in time to see all the previews. One that surprised me was this one, for “Anna Karenina.” Generally, I’m not a fan of “period” movies or of stories have been adapted to the screen already. But the pacing of this one struck me as something I’d consider seeing. In this trailer, the angst and drama of the Anna Karenina character is charged and devoid of sloppy melodrama. I haven’t seen either previous screen versions of this Tolstoy novel– made in 1948 and 1997– but I have to figure the racy angst conveyed in this trailer speaks to an audience weened on the likes of “Game of Thrones,” not Merchant Ivory.

Movie of the Weekend

But the movie that’s most on people’s minds this weekend is “Skyfall.” Yes, Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” starring Daniel Day-Lewis as our bearded President opens today, but I have a feeling people have had their fair share of presidential drama by now. So Bond is on the agenda.
