I’ve had the great pleasure of attending the first night of Flaming Lips at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. There was a (nearly) full moon and the bands massive strobe lights created an incredible ambience. It was the perfect back drop for their performance of the album, The Soft Bulletin, in it’s entirety. They’ve done it before, but this was my first time seeing all those incredible songs back to back. I was in a tweeting frenzy. Mario Cotto and I were trading texts of wonderment and awe. I’m still buzzing. Their second show last night was a performance of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon.

Now to the goods…

1) Vinyl luvvvvin’ – Killer new 7″ from blues man Seasick Steve on Jack White’s Thirdman Records and an exclusive 12″ from Ford & Lopatin. Their latest, Channel Pressure, is totally worth your time if you would like, say… Ariel Pink covering Washed Out and then remixed by Neon Indian. Can you hear that? Sounds good, right?

2) Typhoon “A New Kind Of House” – played the song The Honest Truth as a preview of this album earlier this year. Dug their last album, Hunger & Thirst, as well. Looking forward to hearing the rest of this new disc. Weird story in the sleeve about taking out the trash for the first time is a bonus, though the line, “I am touching my body like a jellyfish in a giant mirror” is a head scratcher.

3) Ocote Soul Sounds “Taurus” – LOVE this band. Their last album, Coconut Rock, came out a couple years ago and hooked me good. No wonder… the band features members of Antibalas and Grupo Fantasma, who scored a Grammy earlier this year for their album El Existential. This new album is their fourth, and destined to get serious air time on most of the KCRW music shows.

Honorable mentions include a package from DFA including the new disc from Yacht & Holy Ghost! Plus, the new Pistolera and Matt Pond PA discs are sure to please.

I’ll be back next Tuesday night!

Best,

Chuck P.
