All of our DJs receive hundreds of CDs a month to consider for airplay. In this regular feature, KCRW DJ Chuck Pcatalogues his musical bounty from the Post Office each week.

There’s a slight chill in the air this week. I like the days where you’re warm in the sun, but need a hoodie for the shade. My favorite time in LA. Plus, my birthday is next week, which is pretty much my favorite time wherever the heck I am. Some goodies in the posty-post today….

1) Thank you vinyl – A Puro Instinct LP showed up today from Mexican Summer Records! Definitely a contender for my top ten of 2011, the glammy throwback sisters (Piper & Skylar Kaplan from Los Angeles) have captured the ears of a few other folks here at KCRW. An absolute gem on vinyl. All of the Mexican Summer/Kemado vinyl releases are well done, and if you’ve got the turntable, worth your dollars. I feel like donning sequin pants and a platinum blonde wig when I listen to this album. Is that so wrong?

2) The Coathangers “Larceny & Old Lace” – at one time a noisy no wave band, but the ‘one sheet’ that came with the cd says they finally learned how to play their instruments and now have a throwback girl group garage sound. Let’s hope they didn’t mess up their formula too much. Dissonance is bliss.

3) The Rosebuds “Loud Planes Fly Low” – reminds me of when I lived in the flight path in San Diego. When I was on the phone, I actually had to tell people to hold on as planes passed overhead. So loud. I bet the new Rosebuds CD is far quieter. Actually, I thought they were calling it a day after their last album, Life Like. Luckily they’re back with something new. I’m hoping for the harmonic, fun pop of their debut. Oh, and I’ve got

to remember to open the packages from Merge Records more carefully. I pretty much destroy every poster they send.

Honorable mentions include the new Black Lips CD “Arabia Mountain” (stoked!) and an EP from an artist named Dan Holguin.

All in all, a great haul.

Cheers,

Chuck P.
