All of our DJs receive hundreds of CDs a month to consider for airplay. In this regular feature, KCRW DJ Chuck P catalogues his musical bounty from the Post Office each week.

HI!

Yes, I’ve been away for a while. Lots lots lots going on which is great, but I’ve been slacking in my blog contributions. Let’s fix that right now. (By the way, using a new wide-angle lens for my iPhone that I got for fathers day… cool)

Currently listening to Quicksand while I’m writing this in anticipation for their appearance at FYF Fest this year. Some great twitter comments the other day while they were playing here in LA. Seems like more people know them for their Smiths cover more than their own songs, but man… this stuff holds up. Looking forward to seeing them live… I believe it will be nearly 20 years since the last time.

While it’s been hot outside, it’s been raining indoors… yup, it’s raining VINYL! (Hallelujah)

1) Singles y Harmony – Beck!Donkeys!Means!Beck, we all know and love. Here are a couple of tracks he recorded while at Third Man. Good/not great, but your milage may vary. Donkeys are from San Diego. Haven’t listened to this new 7″ yet, but I’m hoping for more of their laid back, hammock seeking toons. NONA is the new single of pop genius from Sam Means. Check out a video for the a-side of this single where you can watch John O’Reilly Jr performing the drums tracks. Pretty sweet.

2) Going To War – Battles released a great album last year called Gloss Drop. Since then, remixes of the tracks from the album have been steadily streaming out. Luckily, Warp Recordshas decided not only to collect all tracks for one CD, but have issued this nifty 4xLP 12″ edition. Buy separately or all together!

3) Not Your Grandpa’s Rest Home – Emerald Cocoon sent over a couple of seriously killer and damaged slabs of noise heaven. First up, Pete Swanson of Yellow Swans new 7″ single that covers a track each from NZ underground groups Dadamah and Gate, who is Michael Morley from Dead C. Next, a vinyl document by Helga Fassonaki of the multi media installation from a few months back. In the one sheet that accompanies the album, references to 3 classic noisy double LPs of the 90s that inspired the idea (Twin Infinitives, Market Square & Harsh 70s Reality… the triumvirate!) could be enticement enough to get anyone interested in this type of music to take the plunge.

4) Best For Last? – An INSANE package of vinyl showed up from one of my favorite local labels putting out some of my favorite local bands. Neurotic Yell is the label run by Nicole Turley from WEAVE! and other bands. Highlights for me include the latest from Dante vs Zombies and Brass Tax. With more new music on the way from Amanda Jo Williams and WEAVE! expect a lot from Neurotic Yell in 2012.

Honorable mentions include new CDs from Chris Forsyth, Calibro 35, Spirit Vine, Justin Townes Earle and Alejandro Escovedo, with the digital promo highlights going to Shintaro Sakamoto(for Steely Dan fans!), The Orwells and White Arrows.

I love mail day…

As always, if you want to be included on this here blog entry, feel free to pass along tunes to the address below.

Cheers,

Chuck P.
