Starting Wednesday showers at many California State beaches and parks will be shut off to save water during the drought. Santa Monica and LA County beaches are not yet turning off the faucets.

“There are other opportunities to rinse the sand off,” says Brain Ketterer, Southern operations chief for the State Department of Parks and Recreation. You can bring a big bottle of water or use a brush or towel.

Ketterer says that he’s been given a mandate by the governor to cut water use by 25 percent and saving water at the beaches is the way to do this. This will help California save more than 18 million gallons of water annually.

You won’t be able to shower at Malibu Lagoon State Beach, Leo Carrillo or Point Mugu.

But Santa Monica beaches will keep the water on, as will Dockweiler and Will Rogers beaches.
