Where did you grow up and are you an only child?
I’m from Fresno and I’m the oldest of three. My brother is 5 and my sister is turning 21 in a couple weeks, which worries me… Nah, she’s a good girl.
What is your current occupation?
I’ve been a freelance web and print designer for about a year now.
What is your fantasy occupation?
My boyhood dream was to become a professional boxer, but since I’ve never put on a pair of gloves or set foot in a ring, a career in the music industry might be a more achievable goal at this point.
When did you first discover KCRW?
I’d just moved here and I was at a show and a volunteer handed me a keychain. That small, yellow, rubber keychain changed my life forever.
How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?
I started by volunteering for one of the pledge drives and I enjoyed it so much that I eventually ended up on the street team.
What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?
It started with answering phones at the front desk about 5 months ago. Recently I assisted the underwriting department, but usually I’m helping Frances Anderton with the DnA blog or having a good ol’ time in the events department.
Favorite volunteer moment?
I was picking up some food for the band and crew before an event and I’d accidentally left James Blake’s milkshake on the sidewalk while I was loading the other stuff into my car. I didn’t realize what I’d done until 5 minutes later on the drive to the studio, so I hauled-ass back, praying the entire time “PLEASE GOD LET THIS MILKSHAKE STILL BE THERE!” I parked and sprinted back to the spot where I’d left it and ohhh man was I so happy to find the James Blake’s chocolate-hemp milkshake sitting on that curb untouched. Phew!
If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?
I could probably think of something really clever to say, but I know in the end I’d just end up giving my mom a shout-out.
What song have you hit repeat on lately?
Autre Ne Veut – Play by Play. If you haven’t heard it yet, buy me a drink and I’ll gladly try and sing it for you.
Favorite book, movie?
Swingers still makes me laugh even though I’ve seen it a million times and Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises is one that I often come back to when I have nothing new to read.
Favorite thing to do outside the station?
My graphic design work keeps me pretty busy, but when I’m not doing that I’m going to shows, digging up music, and DJing every now and again.
What does KCRW mean to you?
As I mentioned before, I grew up in Fresno where I didn’t feel like there were many people with the same interests as myself. So to come to a place where there are a lot of like-minded folks, though it may seem like a small thing, is a real blessing to me and I feel grateful every time I get to come in and volunteer beside such a dedicated group of people who are passionate about the work they do. It’s what makes the station great and thank you to everyone for letting me be a part of it.
