KCRW's September Volunteer of the Month

Written by

Meet Niko van Eimeren! She first made her way to interning with KCRW through our Santa Barbara Marketing Internship, and spent her first summer out of college assisting us in the 805, Santa Monica, and every where our Summer Nights events took place as one of our Summer Marketing Interns. She's been an outstanding addition to the team, not only providing good community engagement at our street team table, but helping gather, write, and photograph content for articles and newsletters. And she does it all with a great attitude. Her sweet character and easygoing nature always make it a pleasure to have her on the team. For these reasons and more, she's our September Volunteer of the Month! Here's Niko in her own words...

Where did you grow up and do you have any siblings? Pets?
Around the LA area, mainly in El Segundo. No siblings, but I did have a cat named Romeow!

What 5 things would you wish you had if you were stranded on a deserted island?
A hammock, guitar, sketchbook, the Harry Potter books, and some sort of ipod/music player.

What is your current occupation / what do you do outside of KCRW?
I’m a recent graduate of UCSB and am doing a couple internships this summer before I look for
a full-time gig! I write and take photos for Amadeus Magazine and am also interning for KCRW.

What is your fantasy occupation?
I definitely want to do something related to music or radio. I love interviewing bands and photographing concerts so maybe a music journalist or photographer! I would also love to book shows.

When did you first discover KCRW?
My parents have always had the car radio tuned to 89.9, so I’ve been listening for as long as I can remember!

How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?
I was working for my school’s station in college and realized that I loved being involved in radio. Since I grew up around LA I knew about KCRW, and realized that volunteering would be a great way to continue my involvement in radio and develop a better understanding of how it works on a larger scale.

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?
I just finished PA training so will hopefully start to sub more shows! I’m also the Santa Barbara intern and am part of the Summer Marketing intern team. I got involved… 5 or 6 months ago I think?

Favorite volunteer moment?
Definitely working the street team table at the HQ show with Y La Bamba and getting my favorite album signed by the whole band!

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?

You’re listening to member supported KCRW Santa Monica, Los Angeles. KDRW Santa Barbara. KCRI Indio, Palm Springs. KCRU Oxnard, Ventura, and KCRY Mojave.

What song(s) have you hit repeat on lately?
Pork Belly // Bastien Keb
Suddenly // French Vanilla
I Can’t Stand The Rain // Ann Peebles
Binz // Solange
Righteously // Anna Ash
Kantori Ongaku // Devendra Banhart

Favorite book, movie?
On The Road and Castle in the Sky.

Favorite thing to do outside the station?
Take photos, rock climb, go to shows.

What does KCRW mean to you?
So much! Since I’ve grown up listening to KCRW it will always remind me of home. I’m a big fan of public radio in general, so I think KCRW is such an important and valuable resource for many reasons. Overall, to me it means community. Every person I’ve met through the station has been so welcoming and helpful, and I’m super grateful for the opportunity to learn from such an amazing group of people!

And to us, you mean the spirit that keeps the KCRW volunteer program in motion. Your consistent help and great attitude always shines through. Thank you for devoting your time and skills with us, and we're so happy you're on the team and in the KCRW family!
