Megan Abrahams is KCRW’s November Volunteer of the Month!

Written by

Where did you grow up and are you an only child?
I grew up in Canada and the Bahamas, so I guess that makes me a Commonwealth baby. I’m not an only child but I am the only girl – I have three brothers.

What is your current occupation?
I’m a freelance writer, art critic, and marketing communications consultant. I’m also working on a novel and I paint.

What is your fantasy occupation?
Celebrated painter, with a dedicated wing in the Museum of Modern Art.

When did you first discover KCRW?
When I first moved to Santa Monica as a grad student at USC.
.
How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?
I started by answering phones during pledge drives. Then I began helping at events… which happily led to a regular shift at the station.

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?
I’ve been on the reception desk since spring, 2010 and soon I may begin training to assist in the music department.

Favorite volunteer moment?
I was so excited to volunteer the night KCRW hosted Janelle Monae’s up close performance at Apogee Studios. While we were setting up, we got to see part of her rehearsal, and later, some of the show. It was amazing!

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?
And now, live from the KCRW studio, it’s my pleasure to introduce Mick Jagger.

What song have you hit repeat on lately?
I’m a huge fan of Adele, and I love everything by a talented, emerging, genre-bending, young hip hop artist and producer named Shane Eli, (who happens to be my son).

Favorite book, movie?
Book – A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth
Movie – Kiss of the Spider Woman

Favorite thing to do outside the station (hobbies, recreation, etc.)?
When I was a teenager in the Bahamas, I became a scuba diving instructor. One of my favorite combinations is travel and diving. I attend a lot of art events because I’m an art critic, art lover and painter. I’m also a vinyasa yoga junkie.

What does KCRW mean to you?
When I was a kid, my mother was a producer and writer for CBC radio and television so public broadcasting is in my genes. I’m always tuned in to KCRW’s outstanding music, news and cultural programming. For me, KCRW is a community of cultured, sophisticated, like-minded people – and I love being part of it!

To KCRW, Megan is that perfect volunteer — artsy, creative and funny, but always reliable and on time…what?  Artsy and on time?  Yes.  That alone makes her priceless.
