I’m Liv Surnow, senior events producer at KCRW and 27-year-“old” creator of the Young Creators Project.
Ever since I can remember, I wanted to bring people together in fun and interesting ways. When I was old enough to start working, it seemed the ideas that I would pitch were too big or out of the box. It wasn’t until I landed at KCRW four years ago that these ideas felt truly welcomed and fostered.
Last year, I pitched an ambitious idea called Young Creators Project, a 3-month-long program that invites young creators all over Los Angeles to submit their work to KCRW, gives them the opportunity to amplify their voices across our channels, and provides them with intimate mentorship opportunities with superstars across creative industries.
Last year the project became a reality — not only did we have an overwhelming response of young creators submitting stunning, thought-provoking work, but many of them also came to us with their own ideas of how the project could grow with new elements. In that moment I realized everything KCRW does is deeply collaborative — with YOU. It’s our playground where the sky's the limit, not only for those of us who work here, but for everyone involved in the KCRW community who have ideas that surprise, delight, excite, and hearten. We are now in our second year of the Young Creators Project which is a testament to what can happen when we support and inspire each other.
We’ve all heard the on-air phrase, “KCRW is a public service to the community of Los Angeles,” but don’t forget that our relationship is deeply mutual — the community of Los Angeles serves KCRW, uplifts us, inspires us, collaborates with us, and most importantly supports us. Donate now so that we can continue to grow, create, and truly represent this city we love together.
