We are excited to announce the winners of this year’s Radio Race. The quality and creativity that revealed itself in just 24-hours was inspiring! Thank you to all who participated.
This year’s top racers represent the reach and impact of great radio storytelling. We have winners from Mexico, Australia and Kansas City, MO. Congratulations!
1st Place:
Fountain City Frequency for The Time Travelers Ark
Produced by: Esther Honig, Patrick Quick and Matthew Hodapp
This story transcended its topic (alzheimer’s) to incorporate our theme (Time Change) in a fascinating way. It surprised and moved our judges. This team will win a $1000 contract to air the piece on UnFictional, a one-year PRX Producer account, a one-year Soundcloud Premium account, a one-year PopUp Archive Premium Account, a one-year AIR membership, and a KCRW t-shirt.
2nd Place:
Mike and Timothy for One Step at a Time
Produced by: Mike Williams and Timothy Nicastri
We watched on Instagram as this team struggled with one failed story concept after another. But Mike and Timothy ultimately landed on something great. It’s an intimate interview bolstered by great production values and thoughtful ending. These elements make this touching story piece sound completely fresh.
The team will win a $500 contract to air the piece on UnFictional, a one-year PRX Producer account, a one-year Soundcloud Premium account, a one-year PopUp Archive Premium Account, a one-year listing on AIR’s Talent Directory, and a KCRW t-shirt.
3rd Place:
Esto no es radio for Ahorita:
Produced by: Fernando Hernandez Becerra, Alfredo Nuñez and Valeria Sánchez
The story turned a tiny phrase into a big idea, and was a creative adaptation of the theme and the bonus challenge. We particularly loved watching their racing adventures unfold on Periscope!
The team will win a $300 contract to air the piece on UnFictional, a one-year PRX Producer account, a one-year Soundcloud Premium account, a one-year PopUp Archive Premium Account, a one-year listing on AIR’s Talent Directory, and a KCRW t-shirt.
Unfictional Award:
Giraffe-kun for Reasons to Traumatize Your Child
Produced by: Ruslan Kulski
The Unfictional award goes to the piece that embodies the spirit of Unfictional. The humor and tension made an impression on host Bob Carlson, so this piece will air on the program alongside this year’s winners. Ruslan will also get a one-year Soundcloud Premium account, and a KCRW t-shirt.
One of the best parts about watching the #RadioRace hashtag this year was not only the unexpected stuff (hail, forgotten headphones, sleepy edit sessions), but also the tremendous support everyone showed for their fellow racers. It seemed like there was more engagement on social media this year than ever before – so we have two Social Butterfly award winners this year:
