As of January 1, buying and selling recreational marijuana is legal in California. However, it’s up to specific municipalities to decide how to regulate the business. This means certain cities might have different rules for where you can buy and sell pot. And businesses must get local licenses before they apply for state licenses.

In December, the Los Angeles City Council voted to approve a set of rules making it legal to sell and grow pot in LA, but placed restrictions on where pot businesses can exist. The proposed rules, which must be approved by Mayor Garcetti, include a buffer zone around schools, libraries and parks. They also limit the number of pot shops in the city.
