1. L.A. Conservancy The Arts District: History & Architecture in Downtown L.A.
The Los Angeles Conservancy is offering a one-time only tour of downtown L.A.’s Art District, where you’ll find striking murals, SCI-Arc’s new League of Shadows, Michael Maltzan’s emerging One Santa Fe building, and new design stores overlaying the “distinctly industrial feel and brick warehouse-lined streets,” that, says the Conservancy, “has been in a state of constant transition and change throughout its history. You can discover the many layers of its history while experiencing its colorful and artistic identity today.”
Walk or bring your bike! – a self-guided bike tour will also be provided.
When: Sunday November 10 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

2. ForumFest Honors Michael Maltzan
Speaking of Michael Maltzan (above), he will be the honoree at the LA Forum annual fundraiser, ForumFest, a party taking place this Saturday at Inner City Arts, the exquisite white oasis of a school providing arts and music for public school children in the downtown area. Come support the indie architecture forum and listen to Michael talk about his work, that spans public and private, homes for the affluent and for the transient, all conceived with equal imagination and care.

3. The Olmsted Brothers – Vision, Power-Politics & Priorities over Time
A panel discussion moderated by author D.J. Waldie and RLA Director of Special Projects Claudia Jurmain moderating.
With Guests Frances Anderton, USC History Chair William Deverell; Director, UCLA Urban Center for People & the Environment, Stephanie Pincetl; Environmental Journalist Jon Christensen; Architect Alan Pullman and Adaptive Reuse Developer Tom Gilmore.
At the Never Built exhibition this year, Angelenos were confronted with many ambitious projects for the Southland that (for good and ill) were never realized. One of those projects, drafted by the formidable landscape designers, the Olmsted Brothers, sought, “to enhance Los Angeles County’s natural beauty and to also, protect its cultural assets and fragile ecologies, by linking the mountains to the beaches through scenic parkways and a necklace of open space across the region.”
Although this project was never implemented, Olmsted’s plan represents an important piece of an ongoing conversation about L.A.’s built environment, and will serve as the starting point for a dialogue about tomorrow’s LA at the idyllic Rancho Los Alamitos.
