1. Space X The March to Mars

Brandon Pearce, senior director of avionics and hardware development at SpaceX, will talk at UCLA architecture school’s Hercules Campus in Playa Vista, about our relationship to space. He’ll discuss SpaceX’ efforts to develop a fully reusable rocket—said to be an essential breakthrough for establishing human life on Mars.

When: Tuesday, April 15; Reception: 6:45PM/Lecture: 7:30PM

2. A Snowy Day and the Art of Ezra Jack Keats

The Snowy Day (1962) was the first modern, full-color book to feature an African American protagonist. It was the creation of Jacob (Jack) Ezra Katz, son of Jewish immigrant parents living in Brooklyn, and when it was published during the height of the civil rights movement, the book transformed his career in children’s literature. See more than eighty original works by the artist, from preliminary sketches and “dummies,” or preparatory books, to final paintings and collages.

3. La Cage aux Folles by Warren Techentin, at Materials and Applications 

Silver Lake’s Materials and Applications continues its investigation of formal ideas with La Cage Aux Folles by architect Warren Techentin; he describes his project as an exploration of “the craft of bending, joining form, computational procedures, and fabrication processes in the making of a structure which also locates a variety of proto-domestic activities.One wonders, what are “proto-domestic” activities? DJ Pierrot (Mark Wright of the Vidéothèque, South Pasadena) will perform at the opening.

When: opens April 19, 4-8pm; on show to the public through the summer

4. Shepard Fairey 50 Shades of Black

What do you do when you love an obsolete art form like album covers? You make art “inspired by the 12-inch record cover format.” That’s what Shepard Fairey has been doing over the years and on Wednesday he will release his latest album cover artwork at Subliminal Projects, a gallery space that originated in Fairey’s own Studio One design office and now occupies a storefront on Sunset. DJ Z-Trip will spin on opening night.

When: Wednesday, April 16 · 8-11 PM; Exhibit runs through May 17.

5. MOPLA 

MOPLA, or Month of Photography in Los Angeles is in its 6th year and is hosting a series of artist talks, events and celebrations of photography around the theme Communities and Cultures. Topics this week include everything from Understanding Fine Art Photography to Instagram Photography, and there’s even talk with a prominent National Geographic photographer, Cory Richards.

When: Ongoing during the month and April, this week there will be events on the 16th, 17th, and 19th

Where: Various locations in Los Angeles. Click on specific event on their calendar to find out where.
