1. LACMA Costume Ball
For those of you who couldn’t make it to Masquerade this past weekend, here’s another opportunity to show off your finest costume. LACMA is hosting a costume ball that will include music, food and drink, a costume contest and a chance to browse LACMA’s collections, including the aptly named Haunted Screens: German Cinema in the 1920’s.

2. Altars: Dia de los Muertos at Grand Park
Grand Park partnered up with East LA’s Self Help Graphics and Art to present 50 Dia de los Muertos altars that will be on display at the public park until Saturday. For more Dia de los Muertos celebrations occurring across LA, click here.

3. Hex 11 and Comicaze
Lisa K. Weber is an illustrator with a taste for the dark side. Now she has created Hex11, a sumptuous graphic novel (example above) set in a future world where humans can perform magic. It’s the first outing for Venice-based HexComix, a collaboration between Weber, writer Kelly Sue Milano and producer Lynly Forrest that describes itself as a “100% nerd girl-run operation.” HexComix will launch Hex11 at this year’s Comikaze Expo at the Los Angeles Convention Center, the pop culture convention presented by pop culture icons Stan Lee and Elvira Mistress of the Dark. 4. (G)host Landscapes
Out There Doing It is an ongoing series of presentations by emerging architects, designers and writers, hosted by The LA Forum. This Thursday this yeas OTDI participants — Erin Besler and Ian Besler, Laurel Consuelo Broughton and Andrew Kovacs, Jose Sanchez, Plethora Projects, Katya and Alexei Tylevich, Friend & Colleague — will “create and present artifacts of haunted, lost, uncovered, or dead landscapes in Southern California.” It’s part of a series called Host: Natural Histories for Los Angeles, presented by Big City Forum, Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design, and the Neutra VDL Research House.

5. We Heart Garden Apartments!
Looking for something to do the Saturday after Halloween?
One of LA’s best kept secrets in Los Angeles is Village Green in Baldwin Hills, the complex of garden apartments around magnificent parks, designed in the early 1940s by Reginald D. Johnson, Lewis E. Wilson, Edwin E. Merrill, Robert E. Alexander, Clarence S. Stein, and landscape architect Fred Barlow, Jr. And it’s not the complex of its kind. Turns out LA is home to the second-largest collection of garden apartments in the US, with nearly forty built from the late 1930s through the mid-1950s. This weekend the Los Angeles Conservancy is hosting tours of some of them, with stops at Village Green, Chase Knolls in Sherman Oaks (1948), and Lincoln Place in Venice (1951), newly opened following a contested rehab and redevelopment process. You’ll also learn about Conservancy efforts to preserve Wyvernwood in Boyle Heights (1939), L.A.’s first large-scale garden apartment community.
