Fans of science fiction and the surreal will be in for a treat with Under the Skin, starring Scarlett Johansson. This is Jonathan Glazer’s latest film, and this Tuesday at the Regent there will be a screening as well as a full orchestra performance (performed by the Wordless Music Orchestra) of the film’s award-winning score conducted by Mica Levi (who also composed the score).

2. East-West: Photographs and Paintings
Chinese fashion photographer and artist Chen Man has her debut exhibition on display at LA Louver in Venice. David Pagel of the Los Angeles Times writes that Man’s technique on display at East-Wast “shows Man at her best: juggling disparate genres, styles and conventions to bring memory and fantasy into electrifying proximity.”

3. Adult Art Classes Registration Day at Barnsdall
If you have an art and craft-related New Years resolution, make sure you take the time this Sunday to register for classes at Barnsdall Art Park. They include everything from ceramics to jewelry-making to Ukelele classes.

4. Hollywood Sign Hiking
Those who have tried and failed to hike to the Hollywood Sign will be happy to hear that as of today, the Beachwood Canyon trail is open for hiking. Last March, the city closed the trail (although many still accessed it) in order to install an electric gate “designed to limit vehicle traffic on weekends and holidays, but offer access for hikers during park hours, from 5 a.m. to sunset.” Now the gate is installed –let the selfies commence!

5. Monica Nouwens Talk
Monica Nouwens is an architectural and fine art photographer with a knack for moody or edgy street photos. Her image, above, of a Venice woman walking dogs under a tsunami evacuation zone sign, is one of several by her in Sink or Swim: Designing for a Sea Change, the new exhibition at Annenberg Space for Photography (curated by DnA’s Frances Anderton). This Thursday evening Monica will give an Iris Nights talk at ASP’s Skylight Studios about her recent project Look At Me And Tell Me If You Have Known Me Before and her video installation Sebastian Cough, Claire Phillips, exhibited at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
