As a nation, Americans are infatuated with complementary and alternative medicine. Nearly half of us visit chiropractors, take herbs and vitamins, eat roots or get some part of our body aggressively beaten upon or twisted in the hope of feeling better afterwards.

In some sense this infatuation reflects a failure of allopathic, or western medicine, to connect with the public, to listen, to care and to touch...
