“The Outpost,” directed by Rod Lurie, was a surprise hit over the Fourth of July weekend. It’s sitting at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it seems to be a commercial success, according to video-on-demand numbers.

“The Outpost” is based on Jake Tapper’s book. The film follows a group of soldiers who faced a deadly Taliban attack in a remote part of Afghanistan.

The film’s production had obstacles every step of the way, including budget constraints and an actor’s broken ankle. The biggest challenge was Lurie’s unexpected death of his son Hunter.
