Before co-writing The English Teacher, which was their first feature as screenwriters, Dan and Stacy Chariton collaborated on 14 issues of The Silver Surfer, published by Marvel Comics. Reading books and comics and watching movies greatly influenced Stacy's world growing up, and together, she and Dan infused that ethos into the lead character in The English Teacher, played by Julianne Moore. Together with the school's flamboyant drama teacher, played by Nathan Lane, and a former student, she tries to produce a play against the wishes of the principal and vice principal. And if, while watching The English Teacher, you notice some tongue-in-cheek parallels between producing a high school play and developing a Hollywood film, well, that might just have been on purpose.
