The Treatment
Nat Faxon and Jim Rash: The Way, Way Back
Which writer/director of "The Way Way Back" used to be in a touring hand-bell choir complete with baton twirlers?
Co-writer/directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash first met at the Groundlings' improv school in Los Angeles, doing improv and writing sketches. They've done tons of TV, from Reno 911! to Community (Rash) to Ben and Kate (Faxon). Then, they won an Oscar for co-writing The Descendants, directed by Alexander Payne. Now, they're making their directorial debut(s) with The Way, Way Back, a nostalgia-ridden comedy about a young teenage boy coping with his mom's antagonizing new boyfriend while on summer vacation. This week, Faxon and Rash talk to Elvis about the challenges of making a movie from a teenager's POV (and turning to John Hughes for inspiration), plus, how the title of their film sparked debate among station wagon lovers everywhere.
