Black Science Orchestra and then the Ballistic Brothers, alongside David Byrne. He was also part of the production team known as X-Press 2.
He’s also run a few record labels in his time and is widely respected throughout the industry.
Fast forward to 2011, KAT records have happily put their stamp of approval on two re-edits that hit me instantly when I heard them.
The first is “Angels”, a track originally recorded by Brazilian singer Flora back in 1977. Ashley has managed to keep that sweet summer Brazilian vibe to it and I think he’s bought it up to the modern day, so this one will get support from the new generation of disco lovers.
Next up is a track, which could easily be a forgotten Steely Dan record but it’s actually by Brian Protheroe. The song, entitled “Pinball”, is a great dreamy/psych track that reached #22 in the UK charts back in 1974.
I’m really digging Ashley’s subtle re-arrangement and it’s a track I keep coming back to on my playlist.
