Brownout Brings Latin Funk to LA

Written by

Austin-based 8-piece Brownout make an LA appearance tonight as part of the FREE Grand Performances series in Downtown LA.

The Latin funk group was founded over eight years ago by a few members of the Grammy-winning ensemble Grupo Fantasma and their new album “Oozy” is getting a lot of love here at KCRW. Check out the title track:

According to guitarist Beto Martinez, it started off as a bass line that came to him  in the shower. “The title and imagery associated with ooze seemed intriguing to me, and the song type fit into the general push for more funk on this album as opposed to Latin funk specifically. It does, however, feature the Afro-Cuban bata drums which was a first for us as well.”

Find details on the show here. It also features a project from Ozomatli’s Wil-Dog! El Gavachillo y Banda Viento de Oro fuses traditional banda and norteño music with nothing but horns and drums.
