Daniel Lanois has produced albums for some of the biggest names in music, from U2 to Neil Young, and today he played the duel role of producer and player as part of Black Dub, his latest project.
This was unlike any live session we’ve ever done because Lanois actually took on the role of producer, huddling everyone up together in the main studio, giving it the feel of a studio rehearsal or a jazz jam we just popped into. Lanois called the group a “self-balancing act.” He arranged the session but, once it started, he just sat back and played guitar instead of putting himself at the forefront.
Aside from showing an incredible vocal range, singer Trixie Whitley also played a second set of drums on some tracks, including “Last Time.” Black Dub’s songs are clearly based around the rhythms more than anything else and they jammed out our favorite song, “I Believe in You,” with Lanois calling it the special KCRW version.
