Debbie Allen.

I’ve always been attracted to the arts, even as a kid, and “Fame” was a big movie for me. I was young, but I remember being totally mesmerized by the dancing.

Debbie leads a dance academy based here in LA and puts on an annual holiday production called the Hot Chocolate Nutcracker at UCLA’s Royce Hall, giving the tradition a twist. She wrote and directed it and it runs THIS Saturday!

In her Guest DJ set for KCRW, shetouches on segregation and civil rights (her mom moved the family to Mexico because she couldn’t take dance classes in the U.S.!!), her time as a student at Howard University, and shares some stories about working with Michael Jackson.
