Famed Muralist Judy Baca is Our Guest DJ

Written by

The definition of “street art” is up for anyone to decide, but what I feel confident saying is that the art we come across on our city’s landscape has always told the story of our history and sent an important message about who we are as a culture – and none more so than the work of Judy Baca.

In 1976, the LA native started the Great Wall of Los Angeles, which is one of the largest murals in the world. The idea was to depict the history of California and she continues to add to it.

She was a pioneer in muralism in LA and her Guest DJ Project set reflects her work as a social activist, from Joan Baez and Marvin Gaye to Nina Simone.

She also takes us back to her youth in Pacoima, when a boy in the neighborhood named Richie Valens was making waves. She knew Donna! How cool is that?
