Four Songs You Should Listen to Right Now

St. Lucia – “Elevate”

There’s this swell of joy I get from certain 80’s electro pop songs. And it’s a sound that I’m hearing in a lot current music, including this MBE staple “Elevate” by St. Lucia. Fans of M83 and Passion Pit should hop right on this.

Jean-Philip Grobler, aka St. Lucia is originally from Johannesburg and currently based in Brooklyn. His debut album “When the Night” is out this week.

Wooden Shjips – “These Shadows (Acoustic Version)

When I told Anne Litt I was putting together this weekly list today, she said I HAD to include San Francisco quartet Wooden Shjips.

No need to twist my arm!

It’s an unexpectedly rainy day in LA and this song couldn’t be a more perfect fit. It’s from the forthcoming “Back to Land”,  recorded in Oregon. Psychedelic rock has always been their forte and they continue to explore it in interesting ways.

Albert Hammond Jr – “Cooker Ship”

Every member of The Strokes has released a side project, but I’ve most enjoyed the solo work from guitarist Albert Hammond Jr.

He plays every instrument except drums on his latest EP “AHJ”, out this week. The final track harkens back to the early Strokes sound I fell in love with. It’s his first solo work since 2008. Keep it coming!

Kauf – “Relocate (Psychemagik remix)”

With comparisons to Matthew Dear and Caribou, LA-based artist Kauf (the shortened name of Ronald Kaufman) puts a dark twist on modern electronic music. Much of his success has stemmed from the song “Relocate”, which fell into the hands of Cut Copy frontman Dan Whitford who then signed the artist to his Cutters Records label.

But it’s the remix of the song by UK duo Psychemagik that has been getting a lot of attention from DJ Travis Holcombe and on Metropolis.
