Last week, as part of a private session for Red Bull Music Academy, I had the distinct honor and pleasure of moderating a discussion with old school mega producers, the Mizell Bros, and new school funk luminary, Todd Simon.
The Mizell’s are known and respected for their work with Motown greats like the Jackson 5, jazz giants like Donald Byrd, and funk legends like LTD.
LA-based horn player & arranger, Todd Simon has worked with artists such as Macy Gray, Sharon Jones, TV on The Radio, Madlib, etc.
We spoke in depth about the evolution of the recording process, and each cat riffed candidly on past experiences, the human touch vs. new technologies, and thoughts on the future.
It was an amazing paring of the veteran Mizell’s and young warrior Simon, who also teaches music at a local charter school. It inspired an open dialog that served as a connector for generations, and benefited the hungry hopefuls in the audience, most of whom are currently applying for RBMA’s Tokyo session. Check out Todd playing live with Aloe Blacc. The video quality isn’t great but the sound is pretty good!
