LAMC 2011 – Day One with Raul Campos

By Brent Gordon, KCRW Volunteer and Producer for Raul Campos’ nightly show!

Producer BG in da House here, blogging for KCRW @ the Latin Alternative Music Conference 2011 in New York City.  Raul Campos will be bringing you his show this week from the conference and representing KCRW: introducing panels, hosting artist showcases at some of the great NYC music venues, and sitting down to talk with a few of the most interesting artists and purveyors of Latin Alternative music here at the conference.

We’ve got the prodigious task of broadcasting the show away from home, coordinating a bunch of live artists, and recording and posting as much as we can for all you KCRW fans of Latin Alternative — and just great eclectic music in general. Catch the streams on Raul’s show page here.

We arrived today — albeit separate airports, and met up at the home of the conference and panels, in addition to our makeshift live studio at The Roosevelt Hotel of NYC. We only had time to throw our luggage in the room before we took the Train(s) over to Apple’s globally renowned store in SoHo, to catch Diego Garcia’s live set, recorded for a future “iTunes Live from SoHo” release.  KCRW listeners are already well familiar with this amazing singer/songwriter, and his work as a member of Elefant, as evidenced by the great turnout for our first KCRW Summer Nights show at One Colorado in Pasadena.  You can see and hear Diego Garcia Live on KCRW archived at KCRW.com.

Diego Garcia Acoustic - iTunes SoHo (The original image is no longer available, please contact KCRW if you need access to the original image.)

This was a stripped down acoustic set that should be available in the near future for purchase on iTunes, and Diego was congenial as ever with the crowd and giving little anecdotes about living in the area earlier in his career during each tune-up.

Following the show, Raul and I joined the hard working LAMC staff for an impressively eclectic meal at Hop Lee in Chinatown, a delicious hidden spot known to our gracious host Tomas Cookman since his childhood.  Treated to everything from crab and chicken to snails and muscles, we had to walk off the meal thru Little Italy and get some Gelato and cannoli to help us digest.

Registration begins tomorrow as the conference kicks into full gear, and Raul hosts a show at the Central Park Summerstage with performances by Novalima, Ely Guerra, and Jarabe de Palo.

It’s gonna be a great week.
