It all started with an email.

kd lang sent a simple note to Laura Veirs and Neko Case asking if they would like to record together. They both quickly — and emphatically — responded with a yes. And so began the supergroup case/lang/veirs.

Since kd and Laura both live in Portland, they started the process together with a few songwriting sessions. Neko (who lives on a farm in Vermont) added her flair during some visits to the West Coast, before they formally entered the studio with Tucker Martine (Laura’s husband).

Hearing them talk about their collaboration, it’s clear they have an immense respect for each other, though it was sometimes tough wading through their individual egos and opinions to come to a group consensus.

That said, all the work was more than worth it. It’s a beautiful album, with each musician taking the lead on different songs. It’s the best of each of them all rolled into one.

Their live MBE session was one of their first ever live performances and a MUST LISTEN!
