The new track from 68-year-old singer Bobby Womack stops you in your tracks. Not just because of his soul-barring vocal delivery, but because of the ultra-modern production. And it’s been getting steady spins across KCRW’s music shows.

Rarely do I wonder who produces a song, but after hearing this for the first time, I had to know.

Turns out, it’s Damon Albarn (Blur/Gorillaz) alongside Richard Russell, one of the founders of XL Recordings, who are releasing Womack’s full length called “The Bravest Man In The Universe”. It will be out June 12 here in the U.S.

For those who aren’t familiar with Womack’s work, he wrote and originally recorded the track “It’s All Over Now“, which was a huge hit for The Rolling Stones, as well as the classic “Across 110th Street“. He was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. It’s great to hear soul-stirring new music from the singer and I look forward to hearing more.
