Laura Marling made a huge splash with her Mercury Prize-nominated album “I Speak Because I Can” last year. The young UK singer-songwriter won our hearts with a live performance on Morning Becomes Eclectic, particularly the track “Rambling Man” (in fact, Jason included it in his Top 10 MBE Performances of 2010 list).

Her new song “Sophia” has a bit more punch and I like it a LOT.

The song starts off sounding very similar to her previous balladry and then she takes it somewhere totally different – rich with intensity and almost a country feel. That kind of sonic surprise is what keeps music exciting for all of us serious listeners out there.

“Sophia” is the first single taken from Laura’s third studio album “A Creature I Don’t Know” out on Ribbon Music here in the U.S. September 13. It was produced by Ethan Johns and I can’t wait to hear more after this sampling!

Also, Hollywood Forever just announced Laura will be doing a show in the Masonic Lodge on Sunday, September 18. Tickets go on sale July 29.
