Hacienda while they were touring as Dan Auerbach’s backing band (and opening band) for his excellent solo album “Keep It Hid”. This was before the release of “Brothers”, the Black Keys album that would launch him to festival-headlining fame.

Still, through it all, Dan stuck by this San Antonio-based family band — formed by cousins Abraham Villanueva (piano/vocals) and Dante Schwebel (guitar/vocals) together with Abraham’s brothers Jaime (drums/vocals) and Rene Villanueva (bass/vocals).

He produced their past two albums, which were strong showings, but it’s their latest – “Shake Down” – that hits it out of the park.

Every now and then I find myself rooting for a band. I’m cheering on the sidelines, watching them grow, and waiting for the moment when I can tell the world they HAVE to pay attention. This is that moment.

I popped it into my stereo after a long week of work and found myself jumping on my bed with excitement! There are so many good songs it’s hard to pinpoint one but this one in particular makes me want to drive fast down a freeway before or after having gotten into some kind of trouble. I think that’s what the best rock songs are.

Take a listen to “Don’t Turn Out the Light“.

The album will be out June 19 on Collective Sounds. Check out another track, “Savage”.
