Seeing Sam Beam is like seeing an old friend. It’s a tribute to the intimacy of his music, as moving and poetic as it is.

(BTW, I wonder if I could possibly recognize him if he shaved the big bushy beard — it seems as much his identity as his singing voice!)

His latest album “Beast Epic” (a title he chose because it “sounds really f*cking cool) is a return to the simplicity of his early recordings. The lyrics are gorgeous as ever. If you’re at all unsure of the magnitude of his talent, read the lyrics to “Call It Dreaming“.

For his live set, he played a bunch of fan favorites along with the new songs. I got multiple texts from friends losing their minds over the include of “The Trapeze Swinger“, and this rendition of “Grace For Saints And Ramblers” was really special. He closed the set with an unexpected cover — “Fade Into You“, by Mazzy Star.
