We’re sorry to report that following a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer, Sharon Jones has passed away. Jones’ representatives confirmed that she was surrounded by her loved ones and the Dap-Kings.
The gracious and talented soul vocalist visited KCRW on many occasions and her energy and spirit will be missed.
In 2014, she performed an energetic set on Morning Becomes Eclectic, that would later become one of Jason Bentley’s favorite sessions of the year.
From Jason, reflecting on that performance:
Seeing Sharon Jones at KCRW early 2014, just 15 days after she had completed chemotherapy, the woman was beaming. She and the Dap Kings were making their 5th appearance on MBE, this time behind their album Give The People What They Want, which later earned a Grammy nomination and was the basis of the feature doc Miss Sharon Jones!
I’ll never forget her presence that day – fierce in the face of adversity. You can really see it in these photos by Larry Hirshowitz taken after their MBE set. I think we allI strive to have that brave spirit every day. Strangely, I played her cover of “Inspiration Information” yesterday before knowing of her passing. Rest in Peace Sharon Jones.

This past August, Jones also joined Elvis Mitchell for an episode of the Treatment to discuss cancer and the healing power of music.
